For quite some time, Fay Ralston, 80, had paid $70 a month to rent a 5-by-10-foot concrete unit at University Self Storage in Lubbock, Texas, where she often stayed with her dog. She had been homeless off-and-on for over a decade.
Shortly before 4 a.m. on April 7, while Ralston was sleeping in the unit, she was awakened by the noise of someone breaking in. Grabbing a shotgun that she kept for protection, she fired a blast that struck the would-be thief, Lino Torres, who staggered backward a few feet before falling to the ground. Tortes died at the scene. According to court records, Torres was on parole for burglary of a building after being sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1988.
Ralston did not have a phone, but a witness who saw Tortes' body called 911. ...
