Jul. 8--Spring proved to be a perfect season for local stocks.
Buoyed by a nationwide market rally, all 22 issues in the Richmond Index managed to gain ground in this year's second quarter.
The increases ranged from a 107 percent advance for CarMax Inc., the auto retailer that is experiencing strong profit growth, to a gain of slightly less than 1 percent for Ethyl Corp., the fuel additives manufacturer.
Ethyl's financial performance has also been improving in 2003 after some very rough years, but the stock took a rest after leading local stocks in the first quarter with a 51 percent gain.
