Jul. 7--A group of industrial operators is seeking funds from the Thailand Research Fund (TRF) to build a pilot plant to treat electronic and electrical waste.
The operators would require about 150 million baht to build a facility that could treat all of the waste, or 100 million baht for a partial waste-treatment plant, said Sombat Teekasap, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries' environmental management industry club.
"The TRF will consider which of the two choices will match its current budget," he said.
Technology for eradicating waste has many levels, with specifications imposed by the European Union considered the toughest.
Waste treatment involves chemicals, metals, plastic and other components used in the manufacture of everything from refrigerators and television sets to computers. Demand for treatment and recycling of discarded computers has become especially acute in recent years.
Building a plant to treat waste to EU standards could cost anywhere between 250 million and 400 million baht, Mr Sombat said.
