Jul. 7--Recognising that fat is an impediment to effective corporate performance, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat), which is set to float its shares early next year, is taking steps to slim down.

Consequently, a new company programme is aimed at enhancing efficiency and reducing expenditures.

But it's not metaphorical fat, the type that exists in account books, that Egat is looking to trim.

The agency is teaming up with Ramathibodi Hospital to reduce the body fat of its staff by launching a research programme to come up with a sustainable weight-reduction programme for the sake of their good health.

Nongnuj Unkurapinun, assistant director of Egat's medical and health office, said the programme was initiated amid concern over the number of overweight staff members. According to a random sample of 15,787 employees, about 40 percent were overweight and 6 percent were considered to be obese. The proportion of overweight workers has been rising continuously.

Dr Nongnuj said Body Mass Index (BMI), an international standard, was used as the basis to determine whether someone was overweight.
