Jul. 31--Outer Banks Conservationists was awarded ownership of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse Wednesday, nearly two years after the Coast Guard first announced it was available, but the fight over control of the historic beacon may go on.
Currituck County, which also wanted the lighthouse, could use local ordinances and access to restrooms to contest what county officials see as an unfair selection process.
When OBC, a private nonprofit organization, takes over ownership of the lighthouse and the eight-tenths of an acre around it, the property will fall under the county's zoning ordinances, said Paul Martin, a Currituck County commissioner. While the Coast Guard owned it, county rules didn't apply, he said.
