Aug. 7--Management of Read-Rite (Thailand) has tried to soften a conflict with its employees crying for compensation, ensuring that its new investor had enough cash to pay the amount and that packages for possible laid-off staff could be finalized next week.
About 100 workers, out of the total 6,000-plus staff at Read-Rite (Thailand), yesterday rallied at the United States embassy demanding the embassy's assistance in negotiating with Western Digital Corp. (WD) over the employees' work security.
US-based WD won court approval late last month for its bid of bankrupt Read-Rite's wafer fabrication plant in Fremont, California. As a result, it got the option to purchase Read-Rite's operations in Thailand, which manufactured components for WD's hard-disk drive production.
They also called on the US government to closely monitor the ethics of American companies operating in Thailand.
"A huge profit of Read-Rite, which was contributed from hard-working staff, had been decreased due to its investment in Malaysia and the Philippines," said the statement issued by the protesters.
"Declaring bankrupt and divestiture of assets have benefited the company's owners. It is the way of American capitalists in doing business without ethics and transparency."
