Aug. 6--Martinair Cargo of the Netherlands has designated Bangkok as its second Asia-Pacific hub, instead of positioning the capital as the back-up centre.
Holland's second-largest cargo carrier has also established Bangkok as its second regional office for supervising and conducting cargo-handling for Southeast Asia. The other hub is in Hong Kong.
"We plan to add two more flights per week between Bangkok and Amsterdam within this year, in making the city our regional hub for Southeast Asia, bringing its weekly total to six," said Arie Verberk, president and chief executive of Martinair Cargo.
The cargo-only airline is offering four flights a week in Thailand on its Amsterdam-Hong Kong-Bangkok, Amsterdam-Bangkok-Nanjin, Bangkok-Amsterdam and Nanjin-Bangkok routes.
Mr Verberk cited the 10-20 percent jump in annual cargo traffic in Bangkok in recent years and the country's strategic location in the region as the factors behind for the move.
From the end of the year, the carrier will add one new aircraft to its fleet every year which now consists of 20 B747-100s and MD-11s.
