Aug. 5--The Mekong River ports of Chiang Kong and Chiang Saen in Chiang Rai are growing busier with increased volumes of shipments to provinces in the south of China.

The two ports in the north of Thailand are expected to play more significant roles as gateways to China when the the Free Trade Area (FTA) agreement for fruits and vegetables between Thailand and China takes effect on Oct 1.

According to Chakun Saengruksawong, director-general of the Agriculture Department, the Chiang Rai route was supplanting the former trade route that involved shipping goods from Bangkok's Klong Toey port overland via Laos and to Chiang Rung (Jinhong) in China's Yunnan province.

The ports, which help shippers get their goods to China in just two days, have become popular since China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001. Last year, the ports handled 2.4 billion baht worth of goods, of which Thai products accounted for 1.5 billion baht. The Chinese imports were mainly fresh fruits such as apples and pears.

Most of the products were checked through the Chiang Saen Customs House, said Mr. Chakun.

He said that in order to deal with the expected trade expansion at the ports, especially in fresh fruits and vegetables, the department
