Aug. 5--Thailand's first low-cost airline, spearheaded by national carrier Thai Airways International (THAI), may get off the ground toward the end of the year.
The proposed no-frills airline, similar to Australian's Virgin Blue and Malaysia's Air Asia, will be a joint venture between THAI and yet-to-be-selected partners.
The budget airline will fly domestic and regional routes, THAI president Kanok Abhiradee said yesterday.
Details remain sketchy as a working committee, chaired by THAI board member Vichit Surapongchai, is studying the feasibility and the structure of the proposed low-cost airline.
However, Mr Kanok said it was possible that the airline would be airborne by the end of this year.
Several foreign airlines and tourism-related business operators had approached THAI as prospective partners in the airline, Mr Kanok said, without providing details.
