Aug. 4--The liberalisation of Sino-Thai trade has made the United States more keen to form a bilateral trade area (FTA) with Thailand, according to the president of the Thailand and Development and Research Institute (TDRI).
Chalongpob Susangkarn said members of the US private sector were now aggressively pursuing the prospects for free trade between the US and Thailand and cited as an example TDRI's commission from the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok to do a feasibility on a FTA between the two countries.
He said Washington had changed its position towards nations in this region after China agreed to establish a FTA with Asean nations.
Also of note, Beijing agreed with Bangkok to launch an early harvest programme, which entails reducing import tariffs specifically on fruits and vegetables to between zero and 5 percent from October.
In Southeast Asia, the United States, the world's largest economy, already has an FTA agreement with Singapore.
Dr Chalongpob said another reason behind the more aggressive stance of the US was that it wanted to keep the special privileges for it businesses provided by the Thai-US Treaty of Amity.
