Byline: Geoffrey Rogow
Aug. 12--One of the largest Roanoke-based financial institutions will add jobs and space with a new expansion effort.
Member One Federal Credit Union has purchased the Howard Johnson Express Inn building, adjacent to the credit union's headquarters on Fourth Street off Kimball Avenue Northeast.
Also, its 11th branch -- at Westlake Corner in Franklin County -- is almost completed, and the company has contracts on locations in Christiansburg and Vinton.
Each branch office will hire 10 to 12 full-time employees, with total staff increasing by about 20 percent, Vice President Elaine Rorrer said. As for the headquarters construction, Member One will raze the motel and build a new multistory complex.
Dick Williams, president and chief executive officer of Member One, hopes the credit union will be able to acquire the street between the two buildings and join them.
The motel building, erected in 1966, must have asbestos removed before demolition can begin. Williams estimates that the project will cost about $5 million, including the land purchase and construction.
