Oct. 17--SAN FRANCISCO--Apple Computer Inc. yesterday opened its successful online music store to the millions of personal computers running Windows, as it seeks to push digital downloading of songs from a fringe interest to a mainstream way to buy music.
Apple also said it had struck a deal to sell its iTunes Music Store offerings through America Online and plans to give away 100 million free downloads through a promotion with PepsiCo Inc.
In a colorful press conference here, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the alliances give the upstart computer company two powerful corporate partners to help encourage people who swap files for free over the Internet to begin embracing paid services.
