Alligator Wanders Cargo Hold of American Airlines Flight to Newark, N.J.

Oct. 28--Ever wonder what's in the cargo hold under your airline seat?

If you were on American Airlines Flight 776 from Miami to Newark on Monday, the answer would have been four alligators -- at least one of which got out of its container in midflight.

No one was injured, but the sight of the uncaged gator, which was still muzzled under a burlap covering, was enough to make cargo handlers seal the hold and call in Port Authority police for assistance.

"These alligator bags didn't have handles, but the Port Authority police handled them," agency spokesman Anthony Ciavolella said. "We put these things back in their crates. All of this took place on the plane itself." …
