Sep. 5--The announced import tariff reduction of only three percentage points for completely knocked-down (CKD) vehicle kits is not a sufficient enough incentive for some assemblers to keep their operations in Thailand, according to the Thailand Automotive Institute.
The reduction, to 30 percent from 33 percent, applies to body and chassis components used to assemble one-tonne pickup trucks and vans. It is part of a major restructuring of tax rates by the Finance Ministry aimed to reduce costs of raw materials and parts in order to help local manufacturers be more competitive.
