Aug. 31--It seems like everywhere you look, there's a new school going up.
Neighborhoods in the fast-growing western communities are getting schools to ease crowding. Decaying schools in older, coastal neighborhoods are being torn down and replaced.
The construction boom isn't likely to end anytime soon.
During the next five years, the school district is expected to spend about $3.5 billion to build, rebuild or enlarge more than 50 schools. With a state mandate to reduce class size, even more classrooms and schools may be needed.
The school district has a five-year construction plan that's updated every year.
"It's a very balanced plan," said Joe Sanches, chief of facilities management for the Palm Beach County School District. "We build new schools when we need the capacity. But we're not neglecting the more established communities. They're getting the same quality schools as the newer, more…
