Verizon Communications Reaches Contract Agreement with Unions.

Sep. 7--A day after reaching a tentative agreement, Verizon and union officials claimed victory after weeks of intense negotiations.

The tentative settlement was announced late Thursday, by Verizon and two unions, the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, representing 78,000 workers in the Northeast, including 10,500 in New Jersey.

The unions threatened to strike Aug. 3 when their contracts expired, but federal mediators stepped in to run the negotiations. The two sides agreed to keep talking and the union decided to work without a new contract.
