Sep. 18--An unexpected growth spurt has hit Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, with a tally of 113,859 students leading school officials to cheer the district's popularity while fretting that jam-packed schools keep swelling.
The student population is up from 109,605 last year, according to numbers released Wednesday. That's the biggest jump in six years, and a thousand more students than officials expected.
"I think what this challenges us to do as a district is look at capacity and managing the growth that we have," Assistant Superintendent Eric Becoats said.
The district is struggling with that challenge as it searches for money to build schools and solutions to ease crowding created by a new student assignment plan.
