Rifaximin successfully prevents traveler's diarrhea; leaves enteric flora intact.(News)

NEW ORLEANS -- Treatment with rifaximin prevented traveler's diarrhea in a controlled study with 209 American students who had recently arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico.

In addition, 2 weeks of daily treatment with rifaximin, an antibiotic derived from rifamycin, had a minimal effect on native, enteric flora, Dr. Herbert L. DuPont said at the annual Digestive Disease Week.

"We believe we've shown that rifaximin's properties make it an ideal drug to prevent traveler's diarrhea, and it may be safe for prolonged use," said Dr. DuPont, chief of internal medicine at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, and director of the center for infectious diseases at the …
