Sep. 27--A change on United Way pledge cards makes it harder for workers commuting to Charlotte to send their donations back to hometown United Ways, agencies in outlying counties charge.

The move this summer by the United Way of Central Carolinas sent sister agencies around Charlotte into a panic. Now they're scrambling not only to prod commuters to donate locally, but also to teach them how.

Friction emerged between United Ways as the slack economy shrunk the charity pie, forcing even nonprofits on friendly terms to battle for donor dollars.

Central Carolinas officials say they didn't intend to discourage giving to sister agencies.

The largest United Way in the area, the group is racing to raise $37 million for member agencies in Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus and south Iredell counties by Oct. 30. Its fund-raising drive kicked off in August.

Old pledge cards distributed through employers included lines where donors could write in the charities they wanted to receive their contributions. Instructions read: "Please direct all or some of my gift to the following organization(s) or other United Way."
