Oct. 4--Essentially, plant biotechnology describes a process commonly referred to as genetic engineering in which genetic information and techniques are used to produce improved strains of plants.

Plant biotechnology allows scientists to identify beneficial traits in one plant -- qualities such as added nutrition, enhanced flavour or a greater ability to fight pests or diseases -- and incorporate them into another. This modification process is not new and occurs naturally, usually with the help of wind or insects.
