Oct. 8--Want New Yorkers to cross the Hudson to shop in Secaucus? Offer them something they can't find in all of Manhattan: a Wal-Mart.
That's the thinking of Hartz Mountain Industries executives, who announced Tuesday that the giant retailer will build two stores -- a Wal-Mart and a Sam's Club warehouse store -- on vacant land adjacent to the Harmon Meadow hotel, movie theater, restaurant, and retail complex.
The deal gives both parties something they want. Hartz Mountain gets a tenant it believes will trigger a retail revival for its properties and lure other high-powered big-box retailers.
