Frustrated by censorship in her native Algeria, feisty singer-songwriter Souad Massi jumped at the chance to play in a concert organized by a dissident friend in Paris. Though she'd been taught to view the French as shallow and racist, the 1999 concert, "Femmes d'Alger," turned out to be the most moving and important performance of her career. Not only did the crowd love her, but somewhere in that audience was a talent spotter for Island Records, who got in touch with Massi days later. Her soulful debut, "Raoui" ("The Storyteller"), released in 2001, combined traditional Algerian beats with Western-style acoustic folk-rock and sparked a wave of enthusiasm across the world for Algerian music.
