In the 1950s Mordecai Richler had to leave Canada and go to Britain to make a name for himself. Today that's not necessary: Canada's literary scene is flourishing. Yann Martel's "Life of Pi," about a shipwrecked Indian boy trapped on a lifeboat with a tiger, won the prestigious Man Booker Prize two years ago and has sold more than 3 million copies. Margaret Atwood's dystopian "Oryx & Crake" was shortlisted for two international prizes, and the rights to French Canadian Gil Courtemanche's love story set against the Rwandan genocide, "A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali," have been bought by 15 foreign publishers. "We have seen a huge surge of interest in Canadian books," says Ellen Seligman, vice president of Canadian publisher McClelland & Stewart.
