Rolls-Royce recently changed its chairman and chief executive from Tony Gott to Karl-Heinz Kalbfell. We caught up with the new man at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
AW: What do you say to the fear that German companies are taking over all the great British marques and putting Germans in the top seats?
Kalbfell: I'm aware of this, of course. But I've been with the Rolls-Royce project officially since April 1999 in a management position. I don't want to try to "be British,'' but I love this country and its traditions. What's so wrong with being German?
AW: Aside from your time working on the brand, what recommends you to lead Rolls-Royce?
Kalbfell: First, I want to say that Goodwood [the new Rolls-Royce facility] is a very international group and my coming here really doesn't change much. I've worked five years with Ron Dennis at McLaren on the Mercedes F1 car, then I've been working a lot with Frank Williams Motorsport Limited on the BMW car. I could go on.
