The Toyota Formula One team confirmed it has signed a three-year contract with Ralf Schumacher-and is rumored to agreeing to pay him $12 million a year.
"It is with pleasure that we can announce Ralf as one of Toyota's race drivers for the 2005 season,'' said team principal Tsutomu Tomita. "He has proved himself to be an extremely quick racing driver, and I'm sure his vast experience will be extremely beneficial to our team.
"We haven't finalized who will partner Ralf in 2005, this is something we're in no rush to decide. We're happy with the job Cristiano [da Matta] and Olivier [Panis] are doing for us, and both are under consideration for the remaining race seat next season.''
At Silverstone, Toyota tech director Mike Gascoyne said a decision on a second driver will be made at the end of the season. But da Matta, the 2002 CART champion, said he hoped the team wouldn't wait that long-whether he is chosen or not-so he can start making any necessary plans. He said he doesn't have any other offers at this point from any other teams.

Turns out the Champ Car series will share a date at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with NASCAR trucks on Sept. 25 after all (AW, July 12). The open-wheelers are tentatively scheduled to race at 9 p.m., right after the truck race is completed.
So one of the TBA dates on the 2004 Champ Car schedule is now filled, though the inaugural South Korea race is reportedly still in trouble.
