Warranty war
Regarding your July 5 news story on automakers canceling warranties of cars driven hard or in competition, even in autocrosses: Don't forget that the warranty is included in the price of a new car. By voiding a warranty, the company pockets that money, which I would think amounts to $1,000 to $2,000. We should have a law requiring carmakers to reimburse owners for the cost of a canceled warranty.

Your story made me reflect on my days at a Los Angeles dealership during the time of the 5/50 warranty on Hemis and tunnel rams. On Monday mornings we'd often see one or two cars with shrapnel-riddled engines parked in the service drive. Our main defense was to lightly mist the cars with water, which highlighted the residue left from the glass chalk or shoe polish. We could even read the numbers and class the car was running in when it broke.
