Nov. 1--Thai Union Frozen Products Plc (TUF) has called on the Thai government to negotiate with China to lower its import tariffs on canned tuna to create greater access for Thailand's tuna exports.
According to Chue Chung Chan, a TUF vice-president, tuna import tariffs in China are currently as high as 30 percent, thus curbing the competitiveness of Thailand's tuna business there.
Thailand last year exported a total of 52,007 tonnes of frozen tuna worth 5.45 billion baht, with canned tuna exports totalling 269,580 tonnes valued at 24.09 billion baht.
