Nov. 10--ORLANDO, Fla.--In the first "head-to-head" study of popular diet programs -- the Zone, Weight Watchers, Atkins and Ornish plans -- all four resulted in weight loss of 10 to 12 pounds in a year.
The findings, which also showed improvements in various cholesterol and insulin measures, have prompted doctors to suggest that a one-size-fits-all diet may not be the best approach, especially when heart disease risk is considered along with weight loss.
In fact, a wide range of "eating strategies" can produce weight loss, said the study's main author, Michael Dansinger, an assistant professor of medicine at Tufts University, which conducted the study.
