Dec. 4--The Commerce Ministry will meet with members of the Thai business community as well as the Thailand-US Business Council over the next few weeks to discuss the proposed free trade area (FTA) pact with the United States.

Pongsak Raktapongpaisal, a deputy commerce minister, made the comment after meeting yesterday with Darryl Johnson, the US ambassador to Thailand. The negotiations on the pact are expected to begin in February once the US Congress grants approval for the country to begin formal talks.

According to Mr Pongsak, the US ambassador has suggested that Thailand use the Singapore-US free trade pact as a guideline for the negotiations.
