Dec. 22--BP Exploration Alaska Inc. says new gas-to-liquids technologies being tested in an $86 million demonstration plant at Nikiski, near Kenai, have been proven to work.
The company is also in negotiations with potential licensees for the technology through its partner in the project, Davy Process Technology, according to Steve Fortune, until recently BP's engineering teamleader on the project.
"We're very pleased with how the new systems are working. We have enough experience already to see that our technology works, although we intend to complete the test program," Fortune told the Alaska Support Industry Alliance Dec. 11. "There are no show stoppers," he said.
BP's experience with the demonstration plant, which went into production last July, also shows ways a commercial plant can be built without some of the equipment used at Nikiski.
"Now that we've actually built and operated one of these plants, we see ways that we can eliminate sections of the plant. That will result in significant savings," Fortune said.
