Byline: Pat King
Dec. 21--As a pilot, and as chief of safety for the 3rd Wing at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Lt. Col. Richard Hand understands how serious bird strikes can be for aircraft.
"It's a real threat," Hand said. "We lose airplanes every year because of birds. We take birds very seriously in the aviation business."
Elmendorf is being proactive. The base invests over $250,000 on its bird safety program, Hand said, and passes its lessons on to the rest of the Air Force.
"Our base is recognized as a model for avoiding birds," he said.
Currently, a bird-radar system here is a step toward a future of being able to advise air-traffic controllers and pilots of bird activity in the base's airspace.
The rather humble-looking $65,000 system is the only one in the Air Force.
