Dec. 28--All state permits for the $250 million Pogo gold mine near Delta have been issued, but a snag has delayed a key federal discharge permit until spring.
A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit for Pogo is also still pending.
Teck Pogo Inc. has received state permission to begin construction of a winter road from the Richardson Highway to the mine in anticipation of beginning major construction at the mine and an all-year permanent road later in the spring.
A company spokesman, Karl Hanneman, said in a Dec. 18 press conference with Gov. Frank Murkowski that work will begin immediately on the winter road.
But the main construction effort will wait until the EPA issues a federal discharge permit, according to Bob Jacko, who heads Teck Cominco's operations in Alaska.
Jacko, former manager of the company's Red Dog Mine in northwest Alaska, was recently assigned to manage construction of Pogo.
