Dec. 26--Circuitswitch technology, the telephone industry standard for decades, links callers directly to each other.

The emerging voice-over-Internet-protocol technology carries a conversation like it carries e-mail or data, by breaking voice signals into packets, scattering the packets to available openings on the Internet and then reassembling the packets into voice at the other end.

To use VOIP, as it is known, customers can get a VOIP phone that is plugged directly into a broadband connection.

Or they can use an adapter box. A regular phone is plugged into the box and the box into a computer.
