While some dismiss alternative medicine as a combination of quackery and old wives' tales, 40 percent of Americans have utilized it in some form and, according to a recent study, spend more than $20 billion a year doing so.

Recently another reminder of the increasing popularity and acceptance of alternative medicine: Seattle's Group Health Cooperative had agreed to send refunds to perhaps as many as 100,000 members who had been forced to pay for alternative care that should have been covered by the health plan.
