But the lure of prizes isn't the main reason that fifth-grader Katie Frerichs spends her daily recess running and walking laps around a field at Davidson Elementary School.

"It gets your energy out. It makes you focus more" in the classroom, she says.

Davidson's nearly 900 students are taking to the field during recess, as part of "Tigers on the Prowl," the school's effort to increase physical activity.
