If a closing argument had to be made defending the creation of the city's first leadership and law preparatory academy, Canyon Springs High School Principal Roger Gonzalez could present a winning case.
More than 1,000 students applied for the first 400 seats in the Clark County School District's newest magnet program, which opens with the Northeast Region high school in August, and local professionals from all walks of the legal life have volunteered to help guide the development of the program.
"We're off to a really good start," Gonzalez said Thursday, as he paced the halls of a school still under construction. "We're setting the highest of expectations for our students and ourselves."
The high school's mock trial room, where students will hone their expertise at defense, prosecution and judgment, is just a skeletal framework, but Gonzalez said the building will be completed by mid-August, in time to train new staff members.
