RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico _ Mark and Debbie Ball are hardworking Americans who like to decompress on a beautiful Caribbean beach and are fortunate to live the relatively short hop to warm and friendly Mexico from Cleveland, Ohio. They seem like the perfect candidates for the hottest tourist spot south of the border since Cancun _ the neighboring Riviera Maya.
But the Balls had never set foot on the long stretches of powdery sand, nor taken a dip in the aquamarine waters, nor tasted the spicy seafood of this culturally rich region until very recently. Indeed, they had never been to Mexico.
The reason? The Balls could not find their niche.
