This might be labeled the season that almost was. Several "tween" and teen programs made it out of the starting blocks in the past six months, only to collapse somewhere along the back stretch.
Gone is Out There, a fabulous teen program on the Noggin digital/satellite network that could be called a youth-friendly ER (read: action and romance all in one package). Also gone: The Brendan Leonard Show, a comedy-variety show that moved from public access cable with its high school producer and star to ABC Family, and Girlstuff/Boystuff, an amusing, dare we say tasteful, Noggin cartoon for teens about teen issues.
Granted, getting teens to buy into anything - homework, fashion, food, TV shows - is risky business. What looks good one day is dead in the water the next.
Kids' shows debut just about every month, including Nickelodeon's tween-focused Rugrats spinoff, All Grown Up, which premieres tonight at 7. And a few TV shows have staying power, notably The WB's 7th Heaven and Everwood.
But the danger with quality-show cancellations is that producers and networks won't keep trying. Heaven knows tweens ...
