FINDING A JOB:
_Start now. "The biggest mistake teens make is heading out in mid-June to find a job," said Molly Delano, author of "Summer Jobs and Opportunities for Teenagers." "They needed to start yesterday."
_Look for seasonal jobs or jobs with odd hours, as these may be less attractive to adults. Check with school career centers, job boards and marketing teachers. Ask friends if their employers are hiring. Encourage parents to network on your behalf.
_Check out every business in a strip mall or office building near your home, suggests Ron Cooper, a marketing teacher at Lake Washington High School in Seattle.
_Apply for as many openings as you can. "This summer, in particular, the odds are against you," says state labor economist Roberta Pauer. "Don't think one or two is enough."
