Whitaker appointed
The Bahrain International Circuit has named British executive Martin Whitaker its new general manager, effective immediately. Former journalist Whitaker's career has included spells with the Motor Sports Association, the FIA, Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One group, McLaren Inter- national and Ford (as its European motorsports director). He has recently been working in London with KHP Consulting, a sports marketing agency that lists-guess what-the Bahrain Grand Prix among its clients.
Capello to DTM
Two-time Le Mans winner Rinaldo Capello will make his DTM touring car debut next month. The 40-year-old Italian, who claimed his second Le Mans win last month, will drive one of two extra cars entered by Audi at the non-points Shanghai street race in China on July 18. Peter Terting, a regular with the Audi DTM last year, will drive the second car.
Name game
The terms GT1 and GT2 are being revived for next season as part of the drive toward common rules between Le Mans and the FIA. The Le Mans GTS class and the top division in the FIA GT Championship will be renamed GT1 for next season. GT at Le Mans and the FIA's N-GT category will be called GT2.
