The BMW 1 Series could be very successful if it's sold in America: Enthusiasts are ready for a rwd compact car that is practical yet exciting to drive.

The 318ti's U.S. failure is not reason enough to ignore the potential market for the 1 Series. The Mini Cooper has proven there is an audience for stylish compact cars in America.

Benjamin C. Thomas, San Francisco

The 1 Series packs all the features buyers want, yet differentiates itself from the pack with rwd and a diesel engine. Its class-leading quality, performance, utility and $25,000 price make for a promising and great-selling car.

Nicholas Fahim, Toledo, Ohio

The 1 Series suffers the same problems that faced the 318ti: low power and high price. The Subaru WRX is three seconds faster from 0 to 60 for the same price. If BMW offered a rwd car in the $25,000 range that matched the Subaru's performance, it would sell out immediately.
