There aren't many days like the one June 30 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway because there have not been many drivers like Al Unser Jr., who retired from open-wheel racing.
Yes, the two-time Indy 500 winner ran himself into the ground with a bitter divorce and a nasty addiction to alcohol, but it didn't seem right seeing the 42-year-old son of Al Unser announcing that he was climbing out of the cockpit.
Unser's dominance in the 1980s and 1990s is still fresh in our minds. Did he ever lose at Long Beach? Wasn't he always in the middle of CART's championship chase? How did he keep that boyish smile all those years?
