RAYNAL: At the Scion tC launch in Washington, D.C., Toyota had a lot of the so-called fast-and-furious magazine kids there to drive the new Scion. Most said they hated the Civic Si because it "looks like a bread van.'' I don't know about that, but for those of you who don't like it, get over it and realize what a good driver it is.
Coming out of the Carrera 4 the night before, the Si doesn't feel exactly fast, but it's quick for a four-banger. Sixty arrives in about eight seconds according to published reports, and I like the gearbox and the rev-happy engine. The steering wheel feels like the perfect thickness to me, but the diameter seems a bit small. The seats are fantastic.
I'm fairly confident the Si would be bulletproof over the long haul. I like the Civic Si. Always have. I just wish we got the European version and its almost 200 hp.
PAVIA-RAUCHMAN: Great, dependable, fun-to-drive Civic. But this certainly isn't on the low end of the price scale, is it? As I approached this, in fact, even as I walked away from it, I couldn't figure out what it was. A Focus, a Mazda, a little bread van? It really is rather nondescript. But I do like the looks of the Civic now, compared to the last generation with its mini-sedan looks.
Plenty of oomph on the expressway in and out to work. Good handling. I too am sure it will be bulletproof in the long haul.
