PHILADELPHIA _ Donovan McNabb has changed.

It's not easy to explain. There's no one thing he said over the last 10 days, nothing dramatically different in the way he has behaved. The change is something you would notice only if you had watched him closely for the four years he has been with the Eagles.

The closest thing to hard evidence happened Tuesday morning. McNabb was on the stage of the NovaCare Complex auditorium, a king restored to his throne, answering questions from a playoff-week throng of reporters. And he laughed.

Not once, but twice, McNabb's smile widened so far that actual laughter spilled out.

It was a remarkable thing to see, especially given the circumstances. McNabb has a sense of humor, but he's never exactly been one of the Wayans brothers in news conferences. And this was a serious time. McNabb was talking about returning to the field for the first time in almost two months. His right ankle, fractured in a game Nov. 17, had healed in time for him to start tomorrow night's playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons. Almost a year since his most disappointing loss, in the NFC championship game in St. Louis, McNabb was about to lead the Eagles on another charge toward the Super Bowl.
