MORRISON: There's no need for fancy superlatives here, the Bentley Continental GT is a magnificent piece of automobiledom, despite one thought that struck me: This may be considered the world's most extravagant Volkswagen. Boo, hiss and all that, I know. But take a gander at the dash. Sure, it's covered in lovely black leather and beautiful wood, and it features the classic "organ stop'' vent pulls, but its overall layout looks more than a mite familiar. But hey, we've been praising VW/Audi interiors for years, so perhaps it's not the worst thing.
The engine is obviously a monster. I was, however, dismayed to (barely) lose a Woodward drag race to an SL55 AMG. We were even-steven until the first gear shift, whereupon the SL nosed ahead. An example of 5258 pounds coming into play-not in a good way.
RAYNAL: To the people who say this is a German car wrapped in the British flag, I say I don't care. It's pretty marvelous.
The car is superbly built. All the panels are perfect, the paint is gorgeous, everything works precisely. The performance is awesome but not frightening. It's all a very smooth, creamy experience. The engine hooks up and puts its power down with no drama, just a lot of speed. And I love the exhaust note. One of the few cars I cruised around in without the radio on so ...
