EU chicken ban to have little impact on Thailand's economy, experts say.

Jul. 6--Local economists say a decision by the European Union last week to extend a ban on Thai fresh poultry exports until the end of the year will have little impact on overall economic growth.

One Bank of Thailand executive said total chicken exports were valued at only around US$1 billion per year, or 1.27 percent of total exports in 2003. Fresh chicken accounted for around half of all chicken exports last year.

For the first four months of the year, exports of frozen chicken meat totalled $420 million, down 73 percent from the same period last year. Fresh chicken meat exports were worth around $140 million during the period, or down 10.5 percent ...
