The "replacement cycle." PC makers and sellers look forward to this phenomenon as much as astronomers anticipate the next passing of Haley's comet.
But the personal computer industry better get the stars out of its eyes, say some analysts. The PC replacement, or upgrade, cycle has come and possibly gone, they say.
The last two years amounts to a "stealth upgrade" cycle for PCs, said Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Raymond James.
"The bulk of the replacement cycle has gone by already," said Michael Kelly, chief executive of market researcher Techtel.
The ending of the latest replacement cycle could be bad news for PC makers. But they're not buying that premise. "It's clear that we're now seeing an upsurge in buying," Dell President Kevin Rollins said in an interview.
It seems there's much debate within the industry about the once-vaunted PC replacement cycle.
