ARISINGS 
 
   I was right about the hawk 
   (only that it was one)--its field 
 
   whispered at the same time listen 
   and hush as if 
 
   to be not speaking was not 
   enough-- 
 
   a hawk is a mind's arising. 
 
   Of my tendency to annihilate 
   myself (the sign for enemy is opposite person) 
 
   let's say I raised the gun sunward: 
   not one feather fell or floated upward 
 
   (I missed) 
   not one wing contracted airward: 
 
   hawk: 
   not to be to-nothinged. 
 
   The leafless trees were so loud 
   I raised my glance, let's say, 
 
   to the prickled sky. In seeing 
   what I had heard, in 
 
   hearing what I had seen 
   I could know 
 
   the noise, hear …
