Jul. 3--A property expert has called for banks to provide five-year fixed-rate loans to homebuyers to avoid a rise in non-performing loans, now that interest rates are expected to creep up in line with the rise in the key US rate this week.

Manop Bongsadadt, a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University, said the government should make consumers aware of the correlation between higher interest rates and higher monthly loan payments.

In addition to people with housing loans, holders of credit cards would be affected by an increase in interest rates, said Mr Manop, who also predicted that a rise in individual non-performing ...
