2004 JUL 7 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Five-year results of NSABP (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project) Protocol C-06 that compared oral chemotherapy (UFT/leucovorin) with intravenous chemotherapy (5-FU/leucovorin) demonstrated no significant differences in disease-free survival (p=0.79) or overall survival (p=0.88) between the two treatment arms, with equal tolerability in patients with stage II-III colon cancer.
The findings were presented at the 40th American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting.
"These are significant findings because they reinforce the growing importance of oral chemotherapy in the treatment of colorectal cancer. Similar results have already been observed in metastatic disease, where oral UFT/LV has shown to be as effective as IV (intravenous) 5-FU/LV, but this evidence supports the use of oral chemotherapy at a much earlier stage in the disease process," said Dr. Norman Wolmark, chair of the NSABP, and the department of human oncology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, lead investigator.
